BookFair is Coming! What Can You Do to Help?

For the past year, volunteers have been working hard to prepare for AAFSW’s 48th Annual BookFair.

It’s an enormous job to collect, sort, box and price thousands and thousands of books. Some are rare and valuable and become part of Collectors’ Corner. Preparing to present Art Corner poses a different challenge. Some items need cleaning. Some are fragile. We try to record as much as possible about the provenance and age of each object. Everything must be priced. We must also incorporate Stamp Corner, including coins.

A successful BookFair is crucial to AAFSW as the single largest source of funding for everything that the organization does. Here’s how you can help:

DONATE: To donate to BookFair, please contact Robin Jones (TEL: 202 223 5796). Click here for more information about donating items to BookFair.

VOLUNTEER: If you’d like to help during BookFair, please complete and send in this volunteer registration form. We need help in every area so take your pick! Please send the form in by September 15th to give Diplomatic Security time to produce our special identification badges. This is our final request for assistance.

Mail the volunteer form to:

HELP DISTRIBUTE PUBLICITY: Click here to open a PDF flyer for BookFair ‘08. Please try to find a good place to post it—your apartment laundry room, local library, exercise club or supermarket. You will multiply the BookFair Committee’s efforts when you distribute publicity.

COME TO BOOKFAIR! BookFair ‘08 opens on Friday, October 17th from 2 to 5pm in the Exhibit Hall of Main State (HST) for employees, their escorted guests, retirees and their spouses. During the week, October 20-24, this same group of people will be admitted from 11am to 3pm. BookFair is open to the general public on two weekends: October 18/19 and 25/26 from 10am to 4pm each day. VISA, MASTERCARD and checks accepted. Last day, books half price.

As always, we look forward to seeing you. Thank you kindly!

Donate to the BookFair Art Corner

is your answer to what to do with

1) those items that are going to put you overweight as you head to post; or

2) those things that seemed like such marvelous purchases overseas but that simply do not fit into your smaller home here in the U.S.

By contributing your items to BookFair you can help yourself with a tax deduction, you can support for the organization that provides Livelines to you (among its many services), and you can contribute toward the scholarships that are available to your children.

We are able to sell almost anything, and the Art Corner has become a popular draw for our customers each October.  If you have items to give, please tell us what you can of their origin or use, or other helpful information that makes them attractive to buyers.

Give a call to Robin Jones in the Bookroom (202) 223-5796, or bookroom@aafsw.org and she will arrange a pickup.  She can also answer questions about the appropriateness of an item (and give you information on book donations as well).

BookFair is the main source of financial support for AAFSW, and we cannot put on an event of this size and importance without your help.  So, in addition to passing us those extra items for sale, look for the notices of ways you can help us during the year or, more particularly, at BookFair time.  Your help is crucial!
