What's New at AAFSW
The annual AAFSW/Secretary of State's Award for Outstanding Volunteerism Abroad (SOSA) recognizes the outstanding volunteer activities of U.S. Government employees, spouses, family members over the age of 18, EFM domestic partners, and members of household who are living and working overseas. Winners for 2009 were presented with awards by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at a December 8 event at the Department of State. Click here to read more about the winners and their projects!

AAFSW Announces 50th Anniversary Fellowships for Small Business Start-Ups
The Associates of the American Foreign Service Worldwide (AAFSW) is pleased to announce a special one-time award of a limited number of fellowship funds to Foreign Service family members to support small business start ups. The one time financial award is in commemoration of AAFSW’s 50 years of service from 1960 to 2010, providing advocacy and support to the Foreign Service. The deadline for applying is April 9, 2010.

Apply Now for Foreign Service Youth Need-Based and Merit-Scholarships
Foreign Service children who are seniors in high school can apply for $1,800 AFSA Academic and Art Merit Awards. In addition, Foreign Service undergraduates can apply for need-based, Financial Aid Scholarships ranging from $1,500-$3,500. The application deadline for both awards is February 6, 2010. Simon Trust Welcomes Applications
The J. Kirby Simon Foreign Service Trust is a charitable fund established in the memory of Kirby Simon, a Foreign Service Officer who died in 1995 while serving in Taiwan. The Trust is committed to expanding the opportunities for professional and community service and personal well being of active-duty Foreign Service personnel and their families.
The Trust's main activity is to support projects -- initiated on a voluntary basis by members of the extended Foreign Service family (American and locally engaged employees and family members) -- that seek, on a modest scale, to improve the health and welfare of people living in the host countries. Projects are usually conducted in cooperation with local charitable or educational organizations.
Since its inception in 1997 the Trust has made thirteen rounds of grants, approximatelky 400 in all, to support projects based in approximately 115 countries.
The J. Kirby Simon Foreign Service Trust commends all current and prior grant recipients on their commitment to voluntary community service. The Trust has announced that applications for 2010 grants will be accepted through March 1, 2010. Please visit www.kirbysimontrust.org for more information.
